Colonised by the Portuguese in the 16th century, Macau was the 1st EU settlement in the East. Pursuant to an understanding signed by China and Portugal on thirteen Apr 1987, Macau became the Macau Special executive Region ( SAR ) of China on twenty December 1999. China has guaranteed that, under its “one country, 2 systems” formula, China’s socialist commercial system won’t be practiced in Macau and that Macau will enjoy a high level of liberty in all matters except foreign and defense affairs for the following fifty years.
